The journal started in December 1907 with a sample number. At that time it was published under the title Blätter für Krankenpflege as a supplement to the journal Das Rote Kreuz, published by the Swiss Red Cross. From 1946-1961 the journal was titled Schweizerische Blätter für Krankenpflege. The association Schweizerischer Verband diplomierter Krankenschwestern und Krankenpfleger took over the role of publisher in 1962-1979 and changed the title to Zeitschrift für Krankenpflege.

The journal published technical papers on professional practice, nursing science and professional policy, as well as other health topics of interest to members of the profession.
