The Swiss Federal Railways SBB were founded in 1902 and have been Switzerland's state railway company ever since. Previously, all the railways of the country were owned by private companies. The nationalization of the private railways took place after a popular vote, held in 1898.

The SBB's annual report has been collected and kept in the Swiss National Library since 1902. It is published annually and reports on the company's current situation, future plans, corporate structure and management processes. The annual report also contains a detailed financial section.
