The Schweizer Schule was published from 1915 to 2000 as a successor to the Pädagogische Blätter (1894-1914) and the Pädagogische Monatsschrift (1893), which were published by the association Verein katholischer Lehrer und Schulmänner der Schweiz (VKLSS), founded in 1892. The Verein katholischer Lehrerinnen der Schweiz (VKLS) had already been founded in 1891. The association also acted for a time as a co-editor of the Schweizer Schule, along with the Katholischer Erziehungsverein der Schweiz, whose journal Erziehungsfreund (1876-1893) appeared in the Pädagogische Blätter.

In 1919, the VKLSS changed its statutes and its name Katholischer Lehrerverein der Schweiz (VKLS) and again in 1977, when the association gave up its role as an umbrella organization of cantonal or regional sections, introduced the principle of individual membership and opened up to include women, non-teachers and non-catholics as members and changed its name to Christlicher Lehrer- und Erzieherverein der Schweiz (CLEVS).

The Schweizer Schule was the organ of the association, but also acted as a trade journal to a wider interested audience. The Schweizer Schule was first published at weekly intervals. From 1934 it was published fortnightly, then since 1985 monthly. Since 1998, each year contains 11 issues, one of which is a double issue.
