The Volksschulblatt was first published in 1854 under the title Bernisches Volksschulblatt, then in 1857 as Volksschulblatt and from 1858 to 1860 as the Schweizerisches Volksschulblatt. The aim of the journal was to strengthen the primary [elementary] school as well as to improve the status of teachers. In addition it was intended to provide an exchange forum between the authorities, teachers and parents. It contained school announcements, information about the appointment of teachers, articles and editorials written specifically for the journal or excerpted from other publications. In addition, a school chronicle helped assess national and international news in the fields of education and literature.
